Two friends sitting on a bedroom floor with their backs against the bed, one mid-laugh and one pointing at her, a phone propped on a pillow in front of them

The best questions to ask your best friend are not get-to-know-you questions, because you already know them. Ask questions that test how well you know each other, questions about memories only the two of you share, and a few about the friendship itself. Below are 40 of those, in the order to ask them.

Most question lists for friends are written for people who have just met: where did you grow up, what is your favorite movie. Ask your best friend that and you get a look. The questions below assume you already know the basics, which is what makes them fun: the interesting part is finding out what you got wrong.

How do you play a best friend question round?

The format that works best is simple. For the first set, one of you guesses the other’s answer out loud, then the other answers for real. Score the guess from 1 to 10 for how close it was. A perfect guess is a 10; a confident wrong guess is the best part of the clip.

For the other three sets, just ask and answer, taking turns. Go in order. The sets get a little more personal as they go, and jumping straight to the last one tends to make both people go quiet.

Guess my answer: questions to test how well you know each other

You guess first. Then your friend answers. Keep score if you like, but the real fun is the look on their face when you are confidently wrong.

  • What would I order at a diner?
  • Which chore do I hate the most?
  • What do I do first when I get home?
  • What would I pack for a desert island?
  • What is my go-to comfort snack?
  • Which season do I secretly like best?
  • What would I name a pet goldfish?
  • Would I rather cook or do the dishes?
  • What is my most overused phrase?
  • Which of my habits drives you up the wall?

Swap roles after ten. The person who guessed better gets to pick who goes first on the next set.

Questions about memories you share

These are about the history only the two of you have. They work because both of you remember the same thing differently, and working out which version is right is a conversation on its own.

  • What was the first thing we laughed about together?
  • When did you know we would be friends?
  • What is our most repeated inside joke?
  • What trip or day out would you redo?
  • What is the worst idea we ever went along with?
  • Which time did we laugh until we cried?
  • What is a food that reminds you of me?
  • What is the longest we have gone without talking?
  • What was the most fun we had doing nothing?
  • What is a place that feels like ours?

Questions about what you think of each other

A step further. These ask each of you to say what you actually see in the other person, which is easy to feel and surprisingly rare to say out loud.

  • What is something I am better at than I think?
  • What would I be famous for?
  • What is my best quality as a friend?
  • Which of my opinions do you secretly agree with?
  • What do I do when I am nervous?
  • What would I be like as a teacher?
  • What is something you have learned from me?
  • What do you think I will be doing in ten years?
  • When am I at my funniest?
  • What do I worry about that I should not?

Answer these for each other, not about yourselves. “What is my best quality” answered by your friend is a compliment; answered by you, it is a speech.

Questions about the friendship itself

Save these for last, and save them for a moment when it is just the two of you. They are not heavy, but they are the kind of question that deserves a real answer, not a quick one for a camera.

  • What makes our friendship work?
  • What is something we should do more often?
  • When have I helped you without knowing it?
  • What should we do together before next year?
  • What would you want me to know if you moved away?
  • What is one thing you would never want to change about us?
  • How do you know when I need cheering up?
  • What is a tradition we should start?
  • What do you think we argue about least?
  • What do you want to thank me for?

That last one is a good place to stop, whether or not you are filming. For more questions in this register, deep questions to ask has 48 that slow down in the same way, including a set about the people in your life.

What should you not ask your best friend on camera?

Being close to someone means you know things that are theirs to share, not yours. On camera, the line is simple: nothing about what is in their phone, their messages or their camera roll, no passwords, no addresses, and nothing that gives away something they told you in private. Keep questions away from their appearance, too. A best friend clip is funny because of how well you know each other, not because one of you got caught off guard.

A good rule of thumb: if you would want to check with them before posting the answer, do not ask it on camera. Ask it later.

How do you film best friend questions?

Sit side by side, facing the camera, close enough that both faces fill the frame. Prop the phone at eye level, about an arm and a half away. Side by side works better than facing each other, because the viewer sees both reactions at once, and the reaction of the person not answering is often the funniest part of the clip.

Film the guess-my-answer set as one continuous take. The pace of guess, answer, reaction, score is what carries the clip, and cutting between questions breaks it.

The awkward part is holding the list. If one of you is reading questions off a phone, that person already knows what is coming and the other is waiting on them. Ranking Filter deals a prompt at random above one person’s head and records the 1 to 10 rail into the clip, so you both see the question at the same moment and nobody is reading. If you want a quicker version, where one of you is in the chair and the other fires questions for a minute, the hot seat game is the rapid-fire cousin of this round, and the TikTok ideas with friends roundup has more formats that work with just two of you. For solo answers about your own life, get to know me questions is the set built for that.
