Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 20, 2026

The short version

  • Your face is tracked on your iPhone in real time so picks can sit on your forehead. Nothing about your face is stored or sent to anyone.
  • Your videos stay on your iPhone. We never receive them. You decide whether to save them to Photos or share them.
  • There are no accounts and no ads, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
  • What does leave your phone: anonymous usage and crash reports (Google Firebase), purchase status (Apple and RevenueCat), and anything you send us through the support form.

Who we are

This policy covers the Ranking Filter app for iPhone (listed on the App Store as Ranking Filter Challenge FYP) and this website. Both are published by The Apptor ("we", "us"). We decide how the information described here is used, which makes us the data controller.

Questions about privacy: [email protected].

Your face and the camera

When you record, the app uses your front camera and Apple's on-device Vision framework to find where your face is in each camera frame, so it can place the pick on your forehead.

  • This happens entirely on your iPhone, in real time. Each frame is used for a split second to find the outline of a face and is then discarded.
  • The app only finds the position of a face. It does not recognise who you are, does not create a face map, faceprint or any other biometric template, and does not analyse your expression, age or anything else about you.
  • No face data, camera frames or images of you are stored by the app or sent to us or to anyone else.

The app asks for camera permission the first time you record. You can turn it off at any time in your iPhone's Settings › Ranking Filter › Camera; the app cannot make videos without it.

Your videos, the microphone and Photos

  • Screen recording. Your video is made with Apple's built-in screen recording (ReplayKit). The first time, iOS asks whether to allow screen recording with or without the microphone. If you allow the microphone, the sound in the room becomes part of your video. The app does not listen to, analyse or send your audio anywhere.
  • Where the video goes. The finished video is processed and kept in a temporary file inside the app on your iPhone. We never receive it. If you discard it or leave without saving, it is deleted.
  • Saving to Photos. When you save, iOS asks for permission to add to your photo library. The app only asks to add videos; it cannot see the photos and videos already in your library.
  • Sharing. When you share a video (for example to TikTok, Messages or another app), it goes where you send it, and that service's own privacy policy applies from then on. Please only share videos of other people if they are happy for you to.

Information stored on your iPhone

To work, the app keeps a few things on your iPhone only: your settings (sounds, notifications), the filter images it has downloaded, a note of which filters you have already seen, and the timing of one-off discount offers. The offer timing is kept in your iPhone's keychain so that a one-time offer is not shown again after reinstalling; it contains no personal details. We cannot see any of this.

Usage and crash reports (Google Firebase)

To understand which features are used and to fix crashes, the app uses Google's Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics. They receive:

  • Usage events, such as screens viewed, the filter chosen, a video started, finished, saved or shared (with the video length rounded into a range and how many picks were ranked), onboarding steps, when the subscription screen or an offer is shown and whether a purchase was started, completed or cancelled, answers to notification permission, settings switched on or off, the reason you pick if the app asks what stopped you subscribing, and that a support message was sent (its topic only, never its content).
  • Properties such as whether you have Premium and whether notifications are allowed.
  • Device and app details: device model, iOS version, app version, language, and an approximate location (country or region) that Google works out from your IP address.
  • Crash reports: what the app was doing when it crashed, the device state (for example free memory) and whether you have Premium.
  • A random app instance ID that Firebase creates when the app is installed. It is not your name, email or Apple ID. Deleting the app resets it.

These reports never include your face, your camera, your videos, your audio or the content of support messages. Advertising personalisation signals are turned off, and the app never asks for permission to track you, so it has no access to your device's advertising identifier. The data is not used for advertising and is not combined with data from other companies' apps. Google processes it on our behalf. Builds used for testing (development and TestFlight) do not send usage events.

The app also uses Firebase Remote Config to receive the list of filters and settings for discount offers. That request includes a random Firebase installation ID and basic device details.

We keep usage events for up to 14 months and crash reports for up to 90 days.

Filter pictures

Some filters' pictures are downloaded from our server at apps.anummian.com and stored in the app. As with any download, the server sees your IP address and basic device details for the time needed to deliver the file. No information about you is sent with these downloads, and we do not use them to identify you.

Purchases (Apple and RevenueCat)

Ranking Filter is free to use with the Love Language filter. The Ranking Filter Unlimited subscription is sold through Apple. Apple handles all payments; we never see your card or payment details, and we do not receive your name or Apple ID. You can manage purchases through your App Store account.

To know whether you have Premium, the app uses RevenueCat, which receives:

  • your App Store purchase receipts and transaction details (product, price, currency, dates, renewals and cancellations);
  • a random anonymous customer ID created by the app, and the Firebase app instance ID, so that purchase events can be matched with the anonymous usage events described above;
  • basic device details: device model, iOS version, app version, country or App Store region, and IP address;
  • Apple's Search Ads attribution token. This tells us whether the app was installed after someone tapped one of our Apple Search Ads, and which campaign. It does not use your advertising identifier and does not track you across other apps.

We keep purchase records for as long as needed to provide what you bought and to meet tax and accounting rules.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, the app can send three kinds, all scheduled on your iPhone:

  • Video ready: when a video you recorded has finished processing while you were away from the app.
  • New filters: when a new filter appears. Your iPhone checks for new filters in the background.
  • Tips and offers: at most one a day, only if you agreed to them, and never once you have Premium.

You can switch off new-filter alerts and tips and offers in the app's Settings, or turn off all notifications in your iPhone's Settings › Notifications › Ranking Filter. We do not use a push notification service, so no notification address leaves your phone.

When you contact support

If you use Contact support in the app or the form on this website, we receive your email address, your name (optional), the topic and your message. From the app you can also choose to include the app version, iOS version, device model, language and region setting, and whether you have Premium, which helps us fix problems faster.

The request is sent over an encrypted connection to our support service at support.theapptor.com, saved in our database and emailed to our support team. Both run on Cloudflare. To stop abuse, a one-way hash of your IP address (not the address itself) is kept for 24 hours to limit how many messages can be sent.

We use these details only to answer you and to fix what you report. We keep support messages for as long as we need them to help you, and we delete them when you ask: email [email protected]. Support emails are delivered to our Gmail inbox, so Google also holds a copy on our behalf.

This website and cookies

This website only uses analytics if you say yes. On your first visit we ask whether you accept analytics cookies. Until you choose Accept, Google Analytics is not loaded at all: no cookies are set and nothing is sent to Google.

If you accept, we use Google Analytics to count visits, see which pages are read and measure taps on the App Store button. It sets first-party cookies (named _ga) and receives your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view and the page that sent you here. Advertising features are switched off, and we use these statistics only to improve the site.

If you choose Reject, the site works exactly the same without analytics. Your choice is saved in your browser's local storage (not a cookie) so we don't ask again on every page. You can change your mind at any time:

App Store links on this site carry a campaign label so Apple can tell us, in total, how many downloads came from the website. No personal details are added to the link.

Cloudflare, which hosts this website, processes basic request information (such as your IP address) to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks.

Who receives information

We do not sell your personal information, we do not share it for advertising, and the app shows no ads. These companies process information on our behalf:

CompanyWhat and why
Google (Firebase, Analytics)Anonymous app usage events, crash reports and filter settings, and visit statistics for this website, as described above
RevenueCatPurchase receipts, an anonymous ID and the Search Ads token, to manage Premium
ApplePayments and subscriptions, App Store downloads, and the on-device features the app uses (Vision, screen recording, notifications)
Google (Gmail)Delivers and stores the support emails our support service sends to our inbox
CloudflareHosts this website and our support service, stores support requests and emails them to us
HostingerOur web host, which serves the filter pictures from apps.anummian.com

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.

Some of these companies are based in, or process data in, the United States and other countries outside the UK and EU. Where this happens, the transfer is protected by safeguards such as the UK and EU standard contractual clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its UK extension.

Legal bases (UK and EU)

Under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR, we rely on:

  • performing our contract with you: providing Premium you bought, and answering your support requests;
  • our legitimate interests: keeping the app working, fixing crashes, understanding which features are used and measuring our own Apple Search Ads. We have balanced these against your privacy by using random IDs instead of your identity and by never collecting your face, videos or audio;
  • your consent: for camera, microphone, Photos and notification permissions, and for tips and offers notifications. You can withdraw consent at any time in Settings. Analytics cookies on this website are also used only with your consent, which you can change with Cookie settings.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have the right to ask for a copy of your personal information, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to take it elsewhere (data portability). Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

California and other US states: you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to ask us to delete or correct it, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we do not use sensitive personal information.

To use any of these rights, email [email protected] or use the support form. We reply within one month. Because we do not have accounts, we may ask for details that help us find your information (see Delete your data). In the UK you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk); in the EU, to your local data protection authority.

Deleting your data

Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your iPhone, apart from the small keychain note about one-time offers. For what we or our providers hold, and how to ask us to delete it, see Delete your data.

Children

Ranking Filter is a general entertainment app rated 4+ on the App Store. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them (or from children under 16 in the EU). The app has no accounts and never collects names, faces, videos or audio. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has sent us their details, for example through the support form, contact us at [email protected] and we will delete them.

Security

Information leaves the app only over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Support requests are stored in a private database that only we can access. No method of sending or storing data is perfectly secure, but we keep what we collect to a minimum so there is little to protect.

Changes to this policy

If the app starts collecting something new, we update this page before that version is released and change the date at the top. For significant changes, we will also tell you in the app.
